We moved into Greenbank in July 2007.
Work started on the renovation of the old servants quarters in Oct 2007.
There were originally 4 rooms on the top floor. Two main rooms, a storage room where the servants used to keep all the sheets etc and a wash room which actually had an old mangle in the sink when we viewed the house.
The photos below are the 2 main rooms before the wall came down. Gary could not wait to get his sledge hammer out.
Removing the old lathe and plaster was a messy job. Plus there was the added issue of the logistics of the room with it been at the top of the house up 2 flights of stairs. So to get rid of all the rubble we constructed a pulley system out of the end windows
Once all the lathe and plaster was removed we were left with the supports, you will see these again later in the renovation as they were put to very good use
We decided it would be nice to open up the ceiling and have a vaulted ceiling
With all the walls and ceiling down we were left with a great blank canvas
As you can see from the picture above under the eaves there were some walls, which Gary had the vision to remove to open up the room even more and make room for a "snug"
To make the bar area another wall had to come out which led to the old storage room
To bring in lots of light to the room we fitted 2 velux windows
We then had a hole in the roof
not for long
To allow optimum space to cue right round the pool table another wall came down so it could be moved back 6 inces
Another very messy job but you could see the room developing
Another velux was fitted above the bar area for better light
The old gable end windows were removed - we went through winter of 2007 with these just boarded up. The four sandstone lintels were also replaced
Eventually the new windows were fitted
and the end wall was insulated before been plastered
more insulation was then put on the ceiling
I helped out where I could - notice the taboo and lemonade in hand (well it was Friday night!)
a new floor in the bar area
and then Terry came to start the plastering
We decided it would be nice to make the most of the nice old floorboards on the pool table side so Gary took all the floor up and kept the best floorboards to go back down
One morning Gary went up to get the radio and slipped !! his leg came straight through the bedroom ceiling
glad I had just got out of bed !!
Once we got the floor back down the room started to come together, this is the "snug" below
Exposed brick wall !! we had the 2 old fireplaces restored
the bar started taking shape
then it was time to paint
the toilet area
furniture & pictures
remember this
the wooden supports were used to make the bar top
The pool table was put into position
Then it was time for the carpet
Then we needed to get the Juliet balcony fitted - Auf Wiedersehen Pet comes to mind with a few mates drafted in to help
the balcony was hoisted up on a pulley system
nearly there
sorted
well done lads !
inside everything was coming together
I well earned rest
and the first game of pool
Well worth all the effort
Let the parties begin
What a transformation
Let's have a drink
2 years of hard work but worth it for the end result
